Pete’s academic interests center on material culture, thing theory, and the intersections of knowledge and power. His fieldwork experience spans archaeological projects and ceramic analysis across Nicaragua, Guatemala, and Mexico. The work bridges historical and contemporary contexts, focusing on how material culture and infrastructures influence community formations and social dynamics across space and time. Pete’s current research explores how material practices serve as sites of resistance and agents of change within various socio-political landscapes. By investigating these practices, Pete seeks to understand the ways in which marginalized communities leverage material culture to challenge dominant power structures and create new forms of social solidarity. Drawing on 15 years of teaching experience in Monterrey, Mexico, and the Bronx, New York, Pete critically examines progressive education systems, particularly charter schools, through an anthropological lens. His approach emphasizes an anthropology WITH—methods which engage individuals and communities in a collaborative exploration of how systems are shaped by broader socio-political forces.
