The (Troubled) Field

Date:
April 26, 2014

This conference seeks to expand what could be the accepted parameters of the field site, and to ask what effects the concept of ‘field’ has for anthropology and beyond.

“Where is your field site? What is it? You call that a field?” We answer such questions in order to look professional; indeed a project without a field would never make headway. What defines a valid field site has shifted remarkably over the years. However, the term itself remains uncontested, and many sites are still not considered appropriate for fieldwork. What is a field site is becoming more and more troubled, but many are constrained by prior expectations of what counts as fieldwork.
